Wolves Leading Wolves

I was always told that the city of Bakersfield had nothing to offer when it came to pop culture. It took me a minute but I realize that whoever told me that had no idea what the fuck was going on in the city. The city is filled with people who have everyday practice their art and their creativity and if we are lucky enough they make it for sale. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the creator of one of the best streetwear brands in the city, WolvesLeadingWolves. I picked his brain and we spoke on the struggles of not forcing anything and where he got his start. Take a look at the conversation below.

[HEEM$]

What's going on man, how ya head these days?

[WOLF]

Man it’s getting better, to be honest my head has kind of been foggy for a while but lately, Mashallah, it’s becoming clearer. How have you been doin? I feel like I haven’t seen you in a minute.

[HEEM$]

Yea man its been a minute, I got a new job and shit so that takes up my day and then at nights I got my personal shit I be doing. So we know each other right, been knowing each other lol you are the creator of a streetwear brand right wolves leading wolves. So this gone be a weird question but introduce yourself. Who are you?

[WOLF]

I’m Terry McGinnis with no Batman. but yes sir, CEO , Creative Director, all that. I'm Tyron Anthony F. Brako. I was born in Verona, Italy to a Ghanaian mother and father. I’m a designer for the most part 70% Water 30% Designer.

[HEEM$]

Italy? That's dope, were you raised there at all? I bet you make a fire pizza.

[WOLF]

Up until I was like 3 or 4, I probably make a better pasta than pizza 😂

[HEEM$]

You remember anything from ya time out there?

[WOLF]

I remember going on walks with my parents and getting free strawberries from the side markets. And pulling up to the colosseum with my dad and just sitting on the stones with him. My mom told me we’d go to Juliette’s home out there too. Eating crepes my mom made watching Mr Beans or the music channels and shit. Damn I lowkey got a flood of memories tbh 😂

[HEEM$]

That shit sounds beautiful man, even though I am not one for crepes lol, what was your childhood like moving to the states.. I know the transition was intense

[WOLF]

Man I want to live it again as an adult.

[HEEM$]

So by trade you are a graphic designer? when did the love for graphics start? childhood? teen years... what got you interested in wanting to create?

[WOLF]

Yes I am. I’ve been drawing and sketching shit since 4th grade, I was in mrs Rodriguez’s class when the homie Angel let me borrow his Dragon Ball Z book so I could take it home and trace it all the characters in it so I could make my own whenever I wanted. I was always interested in design whether it was legos drawing NikeiD or Microsoft paint I would always have to get it in somehow.

[HEEM$]

Shit Nike ID had everybody in their design bag lol, seems like shoes Is something everyone wants to design lol... how does your love for drawing translate to what you are doing now like what was the defining factor that made you realize, "clothes is something I want to do"

[WOLF]

Nah man it’s real for me in 7th grade I used to draw Nike SB dunk hi/low Nike Blazers and the Jordan 3 all the time I would get in trouble during English for drawing instead of reading lmfao I used to use up all the dial up and printer ink searching all through the internet looking at js bapes and peeping all the fashion blogs and NBA pages because I was really into basketball shoes for obvious reasons. Shoe design has probably had the greatest impact on my outlook on art. It wasn’t really a moment that made me say I loved clothes, I see clothes as just another medium within art. I love putting shit together, fashion is just another expression of that.

[HEEM$]

Same, I went to private school most of my life, so I had to wear the same clothes everyday, when I went to high school I had no sense of style, it was college and and hip hip that introduced me to clothes streetwear to be exact...

[WOLF]

Damn I had a uniform in kindergarten and boy I was stunting in the khakis. You don’t think being influenced by hip hop fashion can be dangerous?

[HEEM$]

Oh yeah its dangerous as hell, I honestly belief that it warps your mind.. that's why reselling is dead, but I think there are also some benefits to it as well, I mean being a fashion designer, you can use that to your advantage can't you..

[WOLF]

Yes and no hip hop trends move so fast that trying to follow them for inspiration when it comes to creating product ends up washing you and your brand. The key is to build within hip hop not from.

[HEEM$]

So how do you adapt for that? what is your process when creating new designs for your clothes

[WOLF]

You adapt by not forcing shit. Once you learn to be still certain ideas and opportunities just come to you. I form the ideas off references in life from the past or present mostly. I like to show appreciation of certain things through shirt designs. I’m not really ever expressing emotions in my shit, otherwise all my pieces would be angry/dark.

[HEEM$]

I can relate to that, forcing something never ends up performing well..

[WOLF]

I’m realizing everyday that I’m just at the beginning. The period of time I’ve been in has kind of been the origin story phase, it feels like I’m getting into more of the application stage of everything now.

[HEEM$]

What are your thoughts on where you are in life withing your craft and do you have any ideas on what you can do to further it?

[WOLF]

Just being consistent and patient is all I can do now along with doing what I can to put myself out there.

[HEEM$]

I feel that shit! well man thanks for sitting down with me and allowing me to pick ya brain lol I think there is so much more we gotta talk about but imma make people pay for a pt 2

[WOLF]

Thank you man I look forward to it.

[HEEM$]

As-salamu alaykum

[WOLF]
